For those who are more expert than me in diabetes - is it usual for your blood sugar to be really high if you've got a cold or are otherwise ill? Mine was 9.6 this morning and 10.2 yesterday, which is high even for me.
Yes. When your body is under high stress (being ill being one of those things), your blood sugar tends to be higher. I know it's what gets me through having stomach flu, when I can't eat, because I normally have strong spikes and drops, but the stress keeps my body high so I don't drop (thankfully). I learned it when I was pregnant, because labor is also a stress and it meant they had to measure my fluids REALLY carefully so the sugar solution they put in doesn't spike my sugars too hard.
But yes, when you're ill and your body's fighting off infection, your sugars will tend to be higher, so take a little more care with what you eat, and possibly lower your carb intake if you can, just while you're ill.
