I started to listen to "Just a Minute" on BBC Sounds, and in ep. 5 one of the 'subjects on the card' was 'prog rock' and the contestant mentioned the Genesis album "Selling England by the Pound".
It struck me that I hadn't heard that album for ages - could be years. So I paused the podcast and got Alexa to play the album.
The first track mentions the Wearwell Overall company, probably now long out of business.
This reminded me of when I was at school in my 5th form (which I think would now be year 11?) and we had to have meetings with careers advisors.
Being me, my meeting didn't go well.
One of the first things this woman said was, "There are good jobs at Wearwells." I looked at her as if she were mad and said, "But I'm going to university." And she said,"Nobody goes to university from this school." To which I said,"Well I am." And I stormed out. About six minutes into what was supposed to be an hour appointment.
Plus, I refused to go back, a decision for which, for once, I had the full support of my parents.
Such a vivid memory from just a mention in a song.

He also didn’t know how uni requirements broke down into grades or the actual names of the universities in Dublin. (My mum ripped into him for that - by this point she was an expert on higher education applications, as I’m the youngest of five, plus we had my cousins since their mum had died.)
