One of those moments when you know you did something the wrong way round.

I spent about an hour polishing a pair of ankle boots. I don't normally polish my shoes so this was something unusual for me.

I'd just got them to a nice shine when I turned one over...to find a hole in the sole.

Gah!

I should have checked before I started. I have got a replacement pair on order, but they'll be a few more days yet and then have to be worn in - is there anyone who can just buy shoes, and wear them without a huge fight with their feet?

I've never been able to buy cheap shoes, the wearing in process just doesn't make it worth it.

Uhm...re-sole comfy shoes?

Agreed. I've had many pairs resoled over the years.

Can you get a second opinion? My mother has to elevate the heel on her right shoe and apparantly, some cobblers refuse many shoes and claim that it won't work/won't last. But others happily do it and most of the time, it works out perfectly well

I tend to be very picky about having shoes that fit well. I shop at Clarke's as a rule because the have more width fittings. Thus, it takes me very little time to break in shoes, because they're a better fit in the first place.

The downside is that I can go though an entire shop without finding a pair that fit - I have narrow heels and wide toes.

I would never, ever buy shoes by mail order.

Thanks for the link, I've been buying Clarke's since a trip to England in the 70's, and they're easier to get here now. I don't know if this will be of any use to you but they have more international brands and sale prices: http://www.sierratradingpost.com/womens-boots~d~255/

If we ever have money again, Ecco is a brand I'd very much like to try. I've heard good things about them.
