The King

I see in the news that the King has been diagnosed with cancer.

I feel sorry for him in that way one feels sorry for people to whom one is not connected in any way but who are going through a rather bad time.

I hope it's a type of cancer which has a good survival rate - my Aged P had bowel cancer in 1991, was operated on in 1992 and then survived until 2011 when she died of a heart attack. So she survived the cancer really well.

It would be good if he survived like that - we've already spent a ton of public money on the late Queen's funeral and the subsequent Coronation. I know people may think me mean, but I am sort of mean. Sorry.

I had the same type of emotional response of just being sorry to hear that diagnosis for anyone.

I've lost too many people I love to cancer.

My first thought was "Poor man!" And then "oh dear, no one can afford another state funeral & coronation this soon," and then I was back to thinking that cancer sucks and also the UK has enough problems right now (like Cruella DeVille and the Tories in general).

I am sorry for anyone with cancer, and I feel for them and their families. All the possible implications of it inevitably have to be considered, though, and that goes for anyone holding that sort of office.

And it still feels really weird to say/type "the King".

Given his known views on waste, he would probably agree with you about the ton of public money. There were smoke signals from the palace about not wanting a full on extravaganza, but the monarch's personal wishes are fairly low down the priority order when it comes to organizing a major state function with a large side order of international diplomacy attached.
