Last month my washing machine went belly up and had to be repaired. This month it's my cooker. Let's hope they can repair that - it's nine years old.

On the plus side, they're still selling that model. On the minus side, when they come to see it I don't even know where it's plugged in.

And they can't come until Friday. I foresee a lot of takaways in my future.

Sigh.

ETA: I managed to fix it myself, having remembered where the plug is. It was the fuse - the appliance does not work if the electricity is not working. This is the second fuse I've had go in as many months, which is a bit worrying.

EFTA: Not fixed after all. If you put a new fuse in it pretends to be fixed, right up until you try to use the thing. Once you try to turn the oven on, the fuse blows again. So I'll have to reinstate the visit from the repair guys.

I really dread the idea of my (gas) cooker going belly up. I don't even know how old it is, only that it was already here when I moved in 11 years ago.

Mine is a gas cooker and is now about 25 years old, and still working. But I am often grateful for the fact that the only 'electrics' it has consist of the piezo-electric ignition, powered by a large D-cell battery in the bottom compartment. (One of the burners has stopped igniting, but I have a p-e igniter for that one...)

It slightly boggled the contractors' rep who was showing me my new kitchen 2 years ago, when he pointed out the 'convenient' location of the power switch for the cooker, and I turned it firmly off. "Won't need that," I said. "But, but, but, how will you light it?" he wibbled. The plug, stupidly, is right behind the cooker; but I'm now using it with a 3-way extension to give myself extra sockets on the worktop!

Good luck with getting yours fixed!

Mine is similar. I believe it may have a similar battery but I've never bothered to look; I always use one of those "barbecue lighters".

Changing the battery is a pain - it means clearing everything out of the bottom compartment (and finding somewhere to put it!), lying down on the floor, and reaching into a dark, confined space to release the cover, remove old battery & insert new one, and replace cover; then, of course, fitting everything back in again, and finally trying to get back to one's feet! OTOH, I've only had to do it about three times since I had the cooker, which counts as a plus.

That sounds like a very good reason for not even looking. Particularly since the oven has a nasty habit of igniting and promptly going out - I can see this if I do it with the barbecue lighter, I wouldn't necessarily notice if I was relying on the piezo thingy.
