It doesn't actually matter where the phone thinks you are if you just type in the address to and the address from, it will map properly.
If you want to use "my location", you need to turn something on in settings. On mine, it's a GPS icon that's on the top of the notifications page.

I have a different i-device that thinks I'm in London, I think because i have that email address registered at amazon.uk. It's always amusing to click maps on, then type in the address and have it zip across the ocean.
