I had a Tesco delivery last Friday. No problem.

I forgot that I’d booked one for yesterday by mistake and then forgot to cancel it. So we got a load more food. I’m sure [personal profile] aunty_marion and I will manage to eat most of it. At least, we can hope.

Cat news

Geraint is beginning to settle in, he hasn’t yet bitten Marion. And we’re managing to train him to be a bit less hit-and-miss with his litter tray. He’s also beginning to get on with Opal. So, progress.

Edited to add: we have discovered that Geraint is deaf.

Nadolig Llawen or Happy Christmas to those who celebrate, and Happy Holidays to those who celebrate something else.

We have just put our three bird roast in the oven. Looking forward to finding out what it is like.

We visited four exciting places: Beaumaris Castle, Penrhyn Castle, the Welsh National Slate Museum and we went up Yr Wyddfa on the Snowdon Mountain Railway.  They were all quite good in their different ways.

The first was Beaumaris Castle, which is across the Menai Strait. We went by bus, which was quite exciting in itself because of the narrow roads, and the cheapest way to travel. The castle is a genuine 11th century castle, though it is unfinished due to the king at the time (whose name I have forgotten) running out of money because he was engaged in fighting the Scots. As you do, clearly.

It has a nice gift shop, but no café. The town of Beaumaris (pop 1200) has lots of tea shops and things. We found a rather good tea shop who did us an excellent sandwich, but only just in time for us to catch our bus back, which gave [personal profile] aunty_marion and I a bit of a turn.

Penrhyn Castle is the nearest to me, and you get there by taxi if you have no transport. There is a bus stop, but it is a long walk (too long for me) to get to the Visitor Centre on foot from the bus stop. Once you get to the Visitor Centre if you have any sense you wait for a golf buggy, and get a lift to the castle entrance. The driver of the buggy told us that the castle is, in his words, 'Smoke and mirrors.'

It was built in the 18th and 19th centuries as a copy of an 11th century castle. The family who built it were (I hesitate to say 'are' because I don't know them) horrible. The castle itself was built on the work of West Indian slaves on plantations and by exploiting local slate miners. Penrhyn had the nicest food in the café. The Wikipedia entry is interesting.

I thought the Slate Museum was a bit dull. Lots of walking, too much for me, and I have but a slight interest in slate, if you see what I mean. Even the food in the café was boring. The sandwiches only had white bread. Plus, it's £40 in a taxi to get there and £40 in a taxi to get back.

Actually worth the £40 each way in a taxi is the Snowdon Mountain Railway. Great views. The steam train to the summit is £55 return. If you ever get the chance to go, don't book just on the feeling that you might want to do it - there are no refunds if you change your mind. The café at the top has an odd choice of food - burgers and hot dogs. Go figure. And it may be cloudy at the top, as it was for us.

Christmas and New Year went well, though [personal profile] aunty_marion and I both came down with colds. Mine is still hanging around.

Happy Christmas to all those who celebrate.

[personal profile] aunty_marion and I are in the process of cooking our Christmas dinner which is chicken (tastier than turkey) and all the trimmings we can find.

Smokey had a catnip pouch for her Christmas present and seems a bit stunned.

The fridge is stuffed with goodies, and there are more good things on the side in the kitchen. We have mountains of chicken, oodles of pigs in blankets, lashings of champagne and pillows of marshmallows.

Unfortunately, I still have the cold from hell and keep breaking off whatever I’m doing (watching nothing happen on my work computer, sleeping) to cough like a thing that coughs. A grampus, whatever a grampus is. And my ribs are sore where I’ve been coughing, and my throat hurts. I’m due more cold medicine when I’ve finished this.

[personal profile] shezan visited yesterday and I hope I didn’t give her this cold, because she just doesn’t need it. Smokey liked her, she was very attentive. Mind you, that could be because [personal profile] shezan brought taramasalata and Smokey was drawn by the smell of fish.

I’m expecting [personal profile] aunty_marion some time soon. I’m listening (for some value of listening) to Classic FM, though their choice of Christmas music is quite often the tune the old cow died on. I’m not one of John Rutter’s biggest fans, never have been. Give me a few good old carols and I’m happy, forget this modern stuff.

Having said that, my favourite “Christmas” song is the Pogues and Kirsty MacColl’s “Fairytale of New York”, though a colleague said it was chavs arguing. I like it, and play it when it’s not Christmas.

No sign of my cleaner. I suppose I should empty the bins.

Christmas went well, I had a guest, [livejournal.com profile] aunty_marion and we ate various comestibles all either from packets or from frozen. I don’t believe in cooking if I can avoid it. Aunty Bessie does roast potatoes much better than me. [livejournal.com profile] aunty_marion doesn’t like things like raisins or sultanas so I had all the Christmas pud, which made me very happy. Having a guest for Christmas was lovely, and Aunty Marion is welcome any time.

My two cats are still not on speaking terms, though Pixel (the new cat) almost put a foot out of the bedroom yesterday. So minor progress there. Smokey and she hiss when they encounter each other, though judicious use of treats as a reward for quiet is reducing the incidence of this.

I’m considering how Pixel might be brought into the living room without World War III breaking out. Any advice gladly received.

In other news, I have had a cold over Christmas and New Year, much coughing was coughed, and it is threatening to return. I can so live without that, and so can the cats. No sooner has a cat settled on me (either Smokey in the living room or Pixel in the bedroom) than I start to cough and the poor cat leaves in a huff. It’s not much fun for me, either.

Am back from Mancunicon, and setting down with drinks of choice and cuddles from my kitty, whom I missed far more than I had reason to given that she was being properly cared for by [personal profile] aunty_marion.

Had a great time, much gossip was gossed, costumes were worn, drink taken and fun had.

Am back from spending New Year at my brother's place. Yippee!

Though, remind me never to watch Jools Holland's "Hootenany" ever again. Complete and utter tripe from start to finish. What waste of time and effort - and not even live, or so I understand from my brother. Apparently it's filmed in September.

On the other hand, my train journeys went well and the taxis were on time.

My brother and his girlfriend were very nice (they are just nice people), my nephews are very tall - six foot now - and my brother's dog is sweet and not at all smelly.

We ate very well. Vegan mince pies are actually quite tasty.

[personal profile] aunty_marion looked after Smokey and fed her and gave her fuzzles as and when required, so that was good of her. Smokey looks well and is a happy cat.

I lost my iPod and it remains AWOL somewhere in the tip that is my flat, plus I left my reading glasses behind, meaning I was reading my iPad by holding it up near my nose, to everyone's amusement.

That's it, really. On my return, the flat is still a tip and I have yet to find out when the builders will be back. Possibly Monday. Possibly the 6th. We'll see.

Well, the builders have not finished the first tranche of the work. Ho hum.

Smokey spent the last few days at [livejournal.com profile] gloria1’s house in the peace and quiet. It took her a day or so to settle in, but once she had she was stealing [livejournal.com profile] gloria1’s seat with the abandon with which she steals mine. I missed her dreadfully, but it was better that she was out of the noise and disruption.

Disruption continues – my stuff is around me in boxes and I have three outfits which I’m swapping into as and when two get dirty and have to be washed, which is going to make Christmas interesting and memorable. On the other hand, the fridge is stuffed with food, which will make it tasty and fun.

The builders start again on the 27th. Yippee.

The bad news is that the wardrobes aren’t going to be delivered until the 6th of January, meaning that they won’t be installed until the 8th or so. I’ve arranged for my old cleaner, Niki, to come and spend six hours with me on the 9th Jan putting my clothes away and preparing the living room for the work. Once that’s done, on the 10th, Smokey goes back to [livejournal.com profile] gloria1’s to stay with her while the floors are done and the living room is renovated. It should all be done (!) by the 31st. Hm. We’ll see.

The second tranche of work starts properly on the 11 Jan, and that’s also the day my new fiction writing course starts. I hope they won’t want printouts, because my printer will be put away until the second tranche has finished.

I will be putting pressure on the builders to have it finished before the 13th of Feb, because I have a get-together to play Call of Cthulhu that day and as I’ve had to cancel the one on the 9th of Jan, I don’t want to cancel the second one.

Still, Happy Christmas or whichever holidays you’re celebrating this weekend, and cuddles to everyone’s kitties and doggies.

Everyone who's going to WorldCon enjoy yourselves and tell us all about it.

I'm going to a different event, as previously advertised and I will have a fine time, but I will miss you all.

For a New Year's Eve, I'm pretty pissed off. I am so annoyed, i do not have words.

The "new" new computer has just done what the previous new computer did and has ceased to function.

I was changing key boards, so turned it off. When I tried to turn it on again, it wouldn't switch on.

I have checked the cable with the fuse in, and the rocker switch which is on/off, and neither of those put it right. Grump. That's as far as my current knowledge will take me, it could be something inside, but the options are many and I don't have spare units for testing.

Most annoying thing is that I'd dowloaded series 7 of Criminal Minds and tonight's TV sucks.

Any suggestions, I'm open to them.

Obviously, I have contacted the manufacturer, but their helpdesk is shut until Thursday.

In all other things, Happy New Year!

Merry Christmas everyone! As I type this my chicken (not a turkey for just me!) is smelling divine, and all I have to do is decide what veggies to put with it from the variety I have in the freezer.

Great presents from all, and I'm wearing the sparkly earrings I got from [livejournal.com profile] gloria1.

I'm missing the Aged P. rather more than I did last year, but I'm OK really.

I've been having a very quiet time over the last few days, sometimes quiet because I'm actually asleep.

In between z's I've been catching up on reading the pile of unread books which had reached my knees. It's reminded me how much idiot characters annoy me - I don't suffer even fictional fools gladly. Latest example is a story where a Chicago cop and a Russian mafioso are having an affair, and in the book I'm reading they've so far had sex twice without advancing the plot one iota. Why? It's supposed to be a detective story - OK with porny leanings but even so.

Yesterday was good; I had breakfast with [livejournal.com profile] gloria1 then noodled about in a charity shop for a bit without buying anything and then made my way down to my hairdresser to see if he could see me and do something about my wild and woolly locks. He could if I was prepared to wait for a bit, so I went and had a coffee and when I came back he cut my hair. So I have a new coiffure for the New Year. Go me!

And Merry Whatever, for those who don't.

I'm doing better than I expected with being alone. I miss the Aged P., but I'm glad not to have had to travel and I've spent the morning in selfish reading of a book, which I wouldn't have been able to do at her house.

I ordered a chicken to eat, and that's in the oven. Tesco didn't have the size I ordered so sent what they had. When it arrived I just noted that it was bigger than I ordered and put it in the fridge. On looking at it when I came to put it in the oven, I realised that the packaging says that it feeds eight. So there's going to be a lot of chicken curry in my future.

Trimmings are things I like rather than the traditional things. Go me!

Presents are a very good haul, [livejournal.com profile] gloria1 gave me some teabags from Betty's of Harrogate, which are particularly welcome. I love me my tea.

My brother has sent me some Dr Who vids, which I'm going to watch this afternoon while I wait for the Dr Who Christmas special.

There is also champagne in my future, and I have enough chocolates to sink a battleship.
