We use chromecast to display things on the TV from android tablets and phones. It is rumoured to be able to display the desktop from windows. I can have a play and report back.
I am working on a laptop though, which I already know can support an extended desktop on a projector. C uses 3 monitors on his desktop, but I think it's specialised hardware.
I know nothing about any i-things, though I know a man who does. He had a monitor going spare in the bedroom last time I visited. Sadly it wouldn't fit in my bag.
ETA: I was able to cast pretty painlessly from my win7 computer (in another room) by adding the casting extension to chrome. Most people are going to use it for youtube, but it does cast any tab or window that's open. I had chrome showing on top on my monitor and chose to cast a game of cards to the TV that was hidden underneath the chrome window. The only problem I had was when I tried to cast a window that was not the same aspect ratio as the TV screen when it got a bit jiggly. Making sure it was full screen before casting seemed to sort that out.
Chromecast dongles to plug into your TV seem to go for £10 - £20 on ebay or £30 direct from the play store.
It worked for me - it might for you, especially if you can borrow a chromecast to check it works first.
