Afternoon tea, suggestions please

My London-fu is failing me - can anyone suggest somewhere that will do afternoon tea that's within easy reach of the British Museum?

Preferably this should be somewhere that doesn't need days and days of notice as the plan is for next Tuesday (so not the Ritz or the Savoy).

A friend is coming from Germany and she suggested afternoon tea, and (like a fool) I thought she had somewhere in mind, but now she's emailed and she doesn't. She's asked me. But the only two places I can think of would be too expensive and probably a bit far from where we're meeting.

There is a cafe at the London Review of Books bookshop, which does cake and sandwiches, or there's a tearoom under one of the bookshops opposite the Museum, I think (pauses to google... yes, this: http://www.apandtea.co.uk/tearoom.html).

I enjoyed the London Review Bookshop when I ate there.

There's the Hotel Russell, which I've never been in but has a wonderful exterior.

You could also look at the Edwardian Kenliworth, which is even closer to the BM. And there's the Great Court restaurant in the BM itself, which does afternoon tea.

Not especially close to the BM, but on the Piccadilly line, I have had luck with just turning up at the Wolseley. If it's too late to book, they have a non-booking bit, and when they've said 30/40 mins wait, they've always come in less. Very nice staff, and the only egg sandwiches I have not only tolerated, but liked in my entire life.

There's the Montague, just around the corner from the BM

(I love the great court cafe, but it's not often easy to sit and chat in)
