Hah, clicked on Miss Marple and was happy to see I am not alone in wishing to be the tough, clever and cynical one.
mecurtin: I am on the lookout for science personified! (dinosaur science)

Quincy, M.E. Because detecting is more fun with SCIENCE!

Hanging round crime scenes trying to work things out? I think not...

Jessica Fletcher is rich and smart and beautiful and has connections everywhere and is everyone's aunt and never doubts that powerful men should take what she has to say seriously. Why wouldn't I want to be her?

Miss Marple is awesome, but I don't want to be that old yet.

Jessica Fletcher is also courteous and considerate of others. She connects with people easily. She's sweet as well as strong.

Also appealing is the idea of living in a small town in Maine, yet traveling all over the world.

Other: Lord Peter Wimsey.
stranger: Civilization calls, wake up! (Civilization Calls)

Also other: Harriet Vane. She goes through hell, but she comes out the other side with Peter Wimsey, knowing she deserves him and (just as importantly) vice versa.

I don't know all of these -- there might be one that fit -- but I suspect I'm not cut out to be a detective. I hate interacting with people I do not know, my bluffing skill seems dependent on sunspots or something, and I have a very hard time to get myself to go anywhere I'm not invited. *And* I tend to theorise ahead of my data, and in detecting, you cannot easily test your hypothesis to fail.

I'd make a better back office detective than protagonist. Give me a logistics problem, research, or data analysis.
