I've just posted a comment on someone's journal that I thought deserves to be a post in itself.

You would not believe (or, actually, you possibly would) the number of people who seem to think that pay rises and improvements in conditions are handed out by the employer out of the goodness of their little hearts and don't have to be fought for and constantly protected. Likewise improvements in the way that minorities are treated in the workplace.

Dude, I work for an institution that I genuinely believe tries to do what's best for its employees, and even I know that our collective bargaining unit is essential.

Sadly, living in the US makes it all too easy to believe that people think that.

My sister came home Tuesday amused and seriously bewildered. She'd scheduled Thursday and Friday off so we could hang out. Her company is getting in a little bit of a crunch financially and has been asking people to take unpaid time off; for the temps, who don't get vacation, this is actually pretty handy. So her boss points out that Wednesday is open if she wants to do an unpaid day off to go with her two paid, and she pounces on it with a glad cry of "Five-day weekend!"

The surreal part to all of this, however, is that she got called into the boss's office Tuesday afternoon so they could tell her she got a 3% raise as of April 1. While they're facing possible layoffs. *knock on wood*
