OK, now I've thought about it

And stopped panicking...the fact that my boss has disappeared for an unknown length of time (last time his shoulder was bad he was off five weeks, though having said that he'll be back tomorrow) is obviously an opportunity for my colleagues and I to shine in the new boss's eyes.

I can see that. I can.

However the fact that he disappeared without a handover (which is what happens when someone goes off sick) means that I (and my colleagues, but mostly me so far) are picking up work that he was halfway through and that I (we) know nothing about. Hence the feeling of being exposed in a really very uncomfortable way. Today was extremely busy, and in a rather creepy way.
